Last year in August member Mike Mongelli and another friend had the priveledge to hunt with a bowfishing pioneer and Maryland bowhunting legend Mr. J. Rob Davis. Mr. Davis and I had become pen pals after I had purchased his book FAFFY (Flingin Arrows for Fifty Years).

At the time Mr. Davis was 86 years old and still captaining anyone who would want to go and learn how to bowfish stingrays....his passion.  His son Robby was our mate.

We had a great time despite sketchy weather.  We each had multiple shots at the big Southern and cownosed rays.  Fighting the wind and spray Mr. Davis did all he could to get us into the rays.  It was just not in the cards for us.

Rob's bedroom:

The rig:

In Novemeber 2012 Mr. Davis managed to arrow his last big game animal.

This June his son Robbie called me and broke the bad news of Mr. Davis's passing.

Mr. Davis did what he loved and lived a long and successful life. Here is a snippet from his last letter to me:

“I’m glad your so involved with bowhunting that you ventured out, no matter the restrictions- I sure miss the ability of “walking about”; checking that patch of woods or following a trail or whatever looks interesting. My GC (golf cart) is really amazing and satisfies some of my desires.I’m not complaining for I do realize that not many people have been able to “have done that” for as long as I have.”

His last bit of advice, “Enjoy your life”.

Mr. Davis has now gone on before us to tell his tales beside the archery greats and legends around the eternal campfire in the heavens. It was an honor to know you Mr. Davis.

Mr. Davis was credited for helping to establish the first Maryland Bow season.
He harvest Marylands first "Book Buck".

He is the 10th member to be awarded the Art Young game Award by the NFAA in 1967. Also, more recently he was awarded the Grand Master Bowhunter Award in 2002. Rob has penned numerous articles that have been published since the 50’s. Many of his writing appeared in magazines like: Archery World, Bowfishing, The Professional Bowhunter Magazine, Bowfin, Lone Star Bowhunter, Del Marva Outdoors, Traditional Bowhunter Magazine and others.

Great post Greg!  Definitely a weekend I will never forget.  I was just thinking about Betty Lou a few days ago... Wonder how she's holding up?

Going to send BL a card soon. The memorial ceremony and ash spreading is on Sept. 15. I plan to send another card then.

Two4hooking I am surprized to see you shooting a recurve there.  How come I don't see people shooting Hill style bows while bow fishing, except for Howard himself?

Nobody wants to get their Hill style wet and icky, preferring instead to use one of those nasty recurves !  ( OK guys, just funning. . . )

That was a beater all fiberglass static tip bow.....more like a longbow. Dual shelf. I now have a big five for that job. The curve shooter was Mike Mongelli using a bear TD.
