All under the same Burr oak. A lot of the Burr oaks are dropping now up here in dairyland. A heavy crop. Should be fat deer.

Rainy and foggy opening weekend in the NC mountains. I didn’t see anything (until the drive home!) but it was great to finally be out and enjoying some cooler weather.

I hit the hills on Friday. Had a nice day but all the elk sign was old by about a week. This unit edges on the continental divide. The unit on the other side is hard to draw. I suspect the weekend scouters got in there and kicked them over the top.
Pretty country though.

Lucky you, got some nice weather and air!
Archery Elk started here on the 3rd also, but it's in the 90's and so smoky you cant see more than a couple hundred yards. No way to hump and Elk out of the woods without spoilage or choking up a lung.

I had the same results longcruise. Hunted 3 days covering some beautiful lush country but completely devoid of elk. Only saw two tracks and they looked to be a few days old. Even the grouse were spooky, flushing at 25 to 30 yards.

Yes Chuck those are good signs! White oaks dropping here also and the deer are feeding on them. Can’t wait. It opens here on the 15th and my Northern Mist starts twitching in my hand every time I pick it up!

It has been a persistently hot year here in NC too. Got into the 90's in May and stayed there. I'm heading to CO Friday for a week of grouse hunting in the highlands with an old friend. Looking forward to a break from the weather and some Dickle
#12. This will be our first hunt since the pandemic so we will have some catching up to do.
Then when I get back, them little bucks that have been loitering in the garden better look sharp or they might find a little wood sticking out of their ribs 😜

Steve, good luck on you grouse hunting trip. I’m heading to elk camp this week and will be keeping a sharp eye out for some Blue Grouse. They are a welcome diversion when the elk decide to be somewhere besides where I am, which seems to be most of the time.

The grouse population seems to be very good this year. I encountered some on Friday. They all made a clean getaway 🤣
