Sat about 50 or 60 yards from my normal area cause of wind last night. Incredible sit due to Sandhill cranes going over just above treetop level, geese, tons of smaller birds. But alas....with about 5 minutes left and a very sore lower unit. I slowly stood up to stretch. Mama doe stuck her head out not 30 seconds later in those bushes ahead and to the right. She had me. Pretty certain she saw me stand. Dang it. Its almost time. Pre rut next week. Saw the sign on the bushes.

My stump shooting buddy has already (14 days into this season) filled his first two deer tags with a 6 point buck and a small doe. He has now gotten one of the two allowed bucks for each season. Doe tags are unlimited, but unless one drives all the way to the state capitol, one is required to buy two deer tags at a time locally over the counter. He has gotten five deer each of the past three years. He mostly arbitrarily stops at five deer (he claims that it is all his freezers can hold) and leaves one tag unused. In the case that you might be wondering, he hunts on public land and uses a small portable very light mobile hand climber treestand rather than a sit down climber. He is 66 years old.
So far I have hunted 8 days this season. I saw a large doe exit the woods to begin calmly grazing at the edge of a harvested hay field 50 yards away precisely at legal sunset. She was oblivious to my presence. She offered a perfect broadside shot. I still had 30 minutes of hunting time remaining. But, that is about 3X farther than my shooting range while she never ventured closer. I enjoyed watching her until the end of legal hunting time. That is the only deer that I have encountered so far this season. I too hunt on public hunting land. This is the fourth season that I am hunting from the ground. This season I am trying to sit downwind camouflaged from head to toe while sitting quietly and as still as possible on a stool. I also try to sit with the sun to my back, but that often has not worked out more often than not. I tried still hunting for three seasons without success. I am giving up on still hunting for me. I have only been successful from a sit down climbing treestand. I don’t want to climb trees anymore, I hope that I can be successful this season from the ground. ChuckC has been an inspiration in that regard.

Got out for a few hours Friday after work. Saw a buck and 2 does...on my way out of the woods right across from where I had the car parked. Guess they knew I wasn't in the car.
Spent Saturday and Sunday turning this
...into this. Have about 3 cords put up so now I am sure we will have a mild winter.

Aaron those fall colors are beautiful. It’s a great time of year to be outdoors. I wish I had the time to be hunting but it’ll have to keep for a while longer.
