If I recall from comments on another site it seems there was an Englishman in WW11 that took out enemy soldiers with a bow. The author of the article mentions testing this idea for a special ops group. Maybe someone there read about that Englishman and wanted to see what if any use a bow and arrow would be to them. New units tend to try different ideas/things that they feel will benefit them in completing a mission. Personally in regards to the photo , an M-79 grenade launcher loaded with a willy peter round would be more effective.

The only useful employment of flaming arrow I can recall was the Barcelona Olympics when a flaming arrow was used to light the Olympic torch.

As for the Lt Commander...,spit shined boots, pressed fatigues, armguard and glove? Besides, that arrow won't reach beyond the treeline and he's blocking the terret mounted twin guns.
Looks like a PR shot to me.

Replying to
That shot especially Deno. Note his bow hand index finger solidly circles the arrow at half draw. Whatever....PR is important....I guess.

@ChuckC Yes it is...PR , That's what boosts enlistment. Although the draft took care of those who weren't interested...lol

i wonder if the results were really used that much? We had a guy check out a bow and some arrows. Our Gung Ho Sgt wanted him to walk point carrying the bow. idea was to kill the VC’s point man without making noise. Fortunately he never got the broadheads from home to try out the theory.

And before Deno jumps in, here's Navy Lt. Commander Donald D. Sheppard from Coronado, CA in Vietnam, 1967.
