Ira, I believe it was Eicholtz?? who came up with fiberglass backing but also invented the wiper blade. Sorry for spelling.

The metallic part that holds the rubber blade may be called a bow. Similar to a violin or cello's bow. Other than that, I cannot think of a connection.
