Steve, I agree! This advertisement was ran in a popular archery magazine some 44 years ago to prove the worthiness of the straight limbed longbow.
Most of us that shoot the straight limbed longbow do so for the simplicity. We also know the effectiveness of the longbow and the benefits of how quiet it can be without adding multiple silencers on the string and limbs to reduce vibration and the twang sound when the string is released. The straight limbed longbow has proven it’s success in the field time after time.
For my 50lb bow, I would need an arrow weighing a little over 300 grains. Hard to find an arrow that light. Draw length matters as well...
So for them lucky folks that can pull a heavy bow near 28 inches, they get to watch some blazing fast arrows.
For them that have shorter draw lengths and lighter bows (like me), we have to be satisfied with much slower speeds. But that's ok with me. I shoot a straight limbed longbow for the joy of it.
I had a couple people comment on the arrow weight. This was 1977 and John was proving the longbow was just effective as the compound bow. The compound bow was only 2 FPS faster then the longbow using the 487 grain arrow.
